Oprah’s Color Purple Ends Run On Broadway

"The Color Purple" musical will take a bow on Febraury 24, 2008, after two years since its debut on Broadway.

Bloomberg reports that the musical, based on Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize novel and a related film directed by Stephen Spielberg, was produced by talk show host Oprah Winfrey.

The show's end comes after the recent exit of "American's Idol's" Fantasia Barrino, from the musical. Singer Chaka Khan, LaKisha Jones (Idol) and Bebe Winans are currently the featured closing cast members.

Winfrey recently announced the closing of "The Color Purple" at New York's Broadway Theater on her show. Winfrey also confirmed that "The Color Purple" will continue as a road tour.

Appealing to diverse audiences, the commercially successful musical also garnered a Tony Award in the best actress category in 2006. The award was for LaChanze's interpretation of the role "Celie." Winfrey's premiere role as an actress was in the role of "Celie" in the film adaptation of "The Color Purple."
